The 2016 Inaugural Matariki Awards hosted by Māori Television and Te Puni Kokiri were designed to honour and celebrate Māori success in a wide range of areas. Being the first awards of their kind, getting great exposure and media coverage was an important gauge of success.

Pead PR helped prepare and execute the awards, pitching stories and interviews with the finalists into mainstream media. Our biggest challenge for Pead PR was getting media excited over a new award ceremony associated with another media organisation. Luckily we had access to many talented and inspiring finalists to pitch to media including legendary actor Cliff Curtis and rugby sensation Nehe Milner-Skudder. We were able to craft a targeted story pitch for each award category, giving media plenty of relevant reasons to share content.

On the night, we hosted a media table at the event and coordinated interviews with winners, all while managing the show itself and the live broadcast, keeping everything running to schedule.

The inaugural Matariki Awards ceremony was an irresistible success, not only recognising the artists but generating a huge amount of interest across all media and social channels to deliver $750,000 worth of PR value and an ROI of 74:1.

Pead PR led an exemplary campaign to promote the inaugural Matariki Awards, which was hosted by Māori Television in association with Te Puni Kōkiri. The executives of Māori TV couldn’t be happier with the broad visibility of the awards generated by Pead PR’s publicity leading in to the event, and after the live broadcast. Publicity covered the full spectrum of print, radio, mainstream television and social media pick up. Their dealings with the client and other media were efficient and highly professional. Many thanks to the team at Pead PR!
